I just wanted to point out, it is 4:30 and I just woke up. God, I love summer.
I watched a movie with Jarred and Kallie last night (she was sleeping, though.) The movie was U-571, about this damaged german U-boat that these American sailors who try to intercept to get the german coding machine "the enigma" during WW2. While posing as a supply sub for the german sub, their ship gets torpedoed and they are forced to take over and repair the german U-boat, U-571. I'm not going to go too into detail about it, just go rent it, it rocks.
After watching this great movie, it got me thinking, what ever happened to the good ol' days of warfare, when it is going to be about the good old days of warfare when war was declared and it was military vs. military. Remember that, when fudes were settled using militart force only? Now it is different. The enemy cannot be seen as easily, and attacks are made against civilians more often than not. War was so much more structured back then. Countries actually had some sort of ethics when it came to war. seemed to have more class...it really WAS something to be proud of. You knew who your enemy was and you knew what your mission was. Like, you fought these guys over here to stop them from getting supplies to their other posts....simple. Now it is more like, we kill these guys cause we are in an unjust war and we are told to kill them, even though we are invading THEIR contry for no good damn reason. And it goes both ways, our enemys today are sneaky and dirty, and there are no ethics or laws of war. I just hate it, warfare today is so wrong.
The military back then, seemed to have more class...it really WAS something to be proud of. The military became a bunch of crap after the cold war, once we got into dessert storm, it was all downhill from there. The middle east has always been a mess and we are never going to be able to fix it by blowing shit up and shooting people.
I don't want to get in to the politics of it, cause we all know where that will lead us. Just seeing some of those war movies set back in World War 2 really put things into perspective for me. I just miss the days when there was honor in the military and wars were faught for just reasons. Stumble this article.
irisangelapearl @ 07/21/04 "hmmm...I don't know andy, war never really had honor in it most often than not it's started and fought for less than noble reasons and ways. But I do argree with you on the fact that we can't fix things " by blowing shit up and shooting people.""
Hauck @ 07/21/04 "The True story of U-571 was actually a mission by British SAS operatives in WW2 not Americans this is yes another case where you take a truly heroic act and bastardize it for the sake of American viewers. If you want a good war movie go see Apocalypse Now. and yes it was worth my braking my vow of scilence on FV to correct this oversight."
SpIkE @ 07/21/04 "Actually hauck, way to get on a soap box for no reason. I did realize it was the british who got the enigma. And if you read the post again, you will realize I make only one referance to that movie...all i said was that we watched it. The point of this column is to point out there used to be days of was where contries would olny do their fighting through their armed forces, where as these days war is dirty and involves civilans. It is more gurialla warfare than anything else. There is no pride or honor in the wars we fight in the modern era."
The Mexican @ 07/21/04 "Ok jess here we go "fought for far less than noble reasons" now jessica you took history with Berry so you should know what happend in world war two. Millions of dead jews countless soveringe countries invaded and occupied, treatys broken and weapons of mass destruction being produced what i mean by the WMD is hitlers u2 rocket...so lay off you critical homos..anyway...Hitler did all of that now jess you cannot possibly say liberating europe from the grip of the nazis is not nobel. Lets turn our eyes to the pacific. The japanese attacked pearl harbor unprevoked, oh wait we cut off thier oil..but oh wait they were sided with hitler..anyway...they attacked and killed innocent americans. and you think retaliating is not noble. but i will make an observation most unconventional warfar has been in our conflicts with countrys in asia, like Iraq, Japan, Korea, Vietnam...all are places where our military has had to adapt to gurillia warfare. So we turn our eyes to eurpope...germany...ww1 and ww2 war with the germans was what i would like to call a gentelmens war....in the Africa campaing there would be ceasefires to clear the bodys of the deceased and then fighting would resume when the wounded and killed were removed a very NOBLE way of fighting jessica. Now i will comment on "we cant fix things by blowing shit up and shooting people" no it does fix things...shooting people is what relased the nazi grip on europe shooting people is how we got the right to vote and live in a democracy. I will say this...there will always be a battle field war wont end why you ask? becausen for the same reason why an argument of polotics or religon wont ever end....becasue wars are also faught for these reasons. Ive joined the army to help other guys cope with battle...becuase most of our armed forces is made up of young boys who need money for college so im there to help them get the money they need and get out. Im there to help other get through it..becuase i know war wont end."
The Mexican @ 07/21/04 "oh spelling, scentence structure and gramma...fuck that shit!"
selle @ 07/22/04 "WWII did end up being fora good cause, but the reason everyone started fighting really didnt have anything to do with saving all those people in concentration camps, for the most part no one knew the extend of all the crap going on there and america even had camps (though for the most part of a very different nature). i personally site the vietnam conflict as the terning point where war stopped being noble, that was really the first time that war was fought in such a sneaky manner and wasnt backed by a very large number of fighting age kids."
FreakBurrito @ 07/22/04 "In every war in Human histroy atrocities are commited by both sides. Ended."
irisangelapearl @ 07/22/04 "Okay, Jarred what I posted as a comment had to do with war in general i wasn't even targeting WW2. And America was the last to join on the WW2 bandwagon, we could have helped stopped it much sooner and I realize we had our own country problems at the time but when push comes to shove we should have gone to war sooner (oh, yea and not shipped out jews that came over here to get away from nazi control) But besides I think more often then not America especially gets involved in many conflicts that could be avoided all together. And on another note I don't like how some recruiters target poor towns with young men who end up feeling like it's worth risking their lives for the sake of getting a free tuiton. But anywho, in conclusion Jarred stop going on rants about WW2 and such when all i'm trying to say is i just don't find fighting noble and that alot of times i thnk people/countries find it easier to blow things up and kill people rather then really fixing problems."
The Mexican @ 07/22/04 "I know you were not targeting ww2 but you cannot make such a generalized statement like that about warfare."
Hauck @ 07/22/04 "So tell me where is the honor and pride in the 4500 people that were burned to death when the united states firebombed Tokyo the week before we um what’s that term I'm looking for, NUKED not 1 but 2 non military targets, we targeted their industry (civilians) to prevent them from “being able to wage war” between the 2 nuked targets we directly killed more than 5000 people please not both of these numbers are by far larger than the 3000 911 toll. But all in all yes war always does look like a more romantic and heroic thing when you read it in the history books or watch it in a movie and a very frightening and disturbing thing when you witness it first hand and watch it on TV and read the watch the death toll rise. This is the reality of history its never as bad if it isn’t happening to you where is the honor and pride in Killing each other for any reason."
irisangelapearl @ 07/22/04 "I think I love Hauck for writting that, exactly what I was trying to get across just worded better."
Kallie @ 07/22/04 "Brian, don't steal my ended thing. God. But yeah, I'm agreeing with Hauck on this one."
SpIkE @ 07/22/04 "All I was trying to say was that wars back then were fought mainly using armies. It is much different today. It's gurilla warfare...that is what it is today. That was all I was trying to say...do people really like to start arguments just so you can look back and feel good about youtselves? That's pathetic."
Hauck @ 07/22/04 "Ok so we are complaining that we no longer have required conscripts to help fill the ever-thinning front lines of human meat shields. That we use in a poorly lead poorly planned all out attack on a heavily fortified hill that hold not greater strategic advantage than the fact that we need to get past it to take yet another hill that we will loose more men trying to take. This never-ending cycle of the manned army has gone on as long as civilization has existed. These armies are what form nations build cities and FILL GRAVE YARDS. You are honestly telling me that a war fought with foot soldiers and cavalry or by men in trenches, lying for 30 hours next to the corpse of a man that only 2 hours before you were having a drink with, is a more noble and honorable way to commit Murder than from a battle ship 60 miles off shore firing a cruse missile at a target that is being targeted by a satellite 200 miles above the planet. I'm sorry I am rather in favor of modern warfare than the complete blood bath of traditional warfare. "
Kallie @ 07/22/04 "People were just giving their opinions, Andy. Calm down. When you write a column, it starts discussion. People were giving different views and I don't think that calling the audience "pathetic" is such a great way to go."
SpIkE @ 07/22/04 "LOL, i think you have a good point there. I have no problem with other people's opinions. I dunno"
FacUtVivas @ 07/30/04 "Say, maybe if we stoped wasting resources killing random people for sensless reasons, we could do something more interesting than the status-quo"
