Today in my spambox (which I rarely check) I noticed a weird spam message. It didn't smell like most of those rotton ones...

It read:

Hello,

My name is Valentin. I have 25 years and I live with my mother in small Russian town. My mother cannot see since many years and she receive little indemnity wich not enough even for medicaments.

I work very hard to buy necessities, food and medicaments for my mother and me, but my salary be very small.

During last months prices for gas and electricity becomed very high and we cannot use it to heat our home anymore. We have winter, many snow and temperature is very cold here already. The radio say it will be till minus 30 degrees in the near weeks. We do not know what to do and we very afraid.

Only way for us to heat our home is to use portable wood-burning stove which giving heat with burning wood. We have many wood in our region, therefore this stove will heat our home all winter with minimal charges. But we cannot buy this stove in our market because it very expensive for us.

Thanks to free internet in our library and library computer I finded several addreses and decided to appeal to you for help. If you have any old sleping bag, warm blanket, warm socks, vitamines, medicamentes against cold flu, product of gygiene, I would be very grateful to you if you donate it for us and send to our post address:

Christmas coming and I would be very grateful to you if you can send some sweets for my mother. I will give them to my mother in Christmas night and it will make my mother very happy.

I send you best wishes.

Valentin and my mother Elena.

I have to admit- this is the strangest spam message I've ever gotten. It seems to appeal on a personal level, to the point where I almost want to send him stuff.

But then again, that is the point of spam, right? To get you interested on a personal level- to the point where you just can't believe it isn't for real. Then you buy the enlargment pills, and they don't work. Or you send $50K overseas and you never see your check. What have you.

But how can this scammer be really making money? He's asking for sleeping bags and toothpaste!

This has to be either the real thing, or some clever spam that finally made it through the human filter- only forgetting one thing, in order to make it 90% believable, they forgot to add the marketing scam part. Unless this guy is seriously selling sleeping bags- which is a possibility.
