Interest List: Shopping

It never astounds me more- seeing a girl list in her online profile (be it myspace, livejournal, facebook, blogger, etc) her interests & hobbies include: friends, chatting, IM, hanging out, and...

SHOPPING

Of course, it really is a sign of the times, but also a sign of the inequality this culture has instilled into the different sexes. Where women have no problem fitting snugly into the stereotype that they're more expected to be- the dumb mall-girl.

Never, ever, ever, can shopping be considered a hobby- unless it's possible that you pick up antique statue angels at flea markets nationwide- and you travel route 66 in your camper just to find the right ones to finish the collection. THAT'S A FREAKIN HOBBY! But what makes it the hobby? The specialization? The collection? All of the above? Who knows? Certainly not women!

Seriously folks, how about you make an online profile and list the most generic of things as an interest or hobby- that way people can immediately tell that you're not interesting at all. You're generic.

We all shop- it's not that it doesn't happen. Some people enjoy it more than others. But shopping is a conduit for getting stuff. Discovering new things is always fun, but only because the things you discover are usually so darn cool! But for heaven's sake- the act of shopping is not I REPEAT: NOT the interest or hobby- it's what you're shopping for... And if that's clothing, then you're fired- clothes shopping is not a hobby. Shopping for electronics to build a robot- that's a hobby. Shopping for just the right toy/statue/component/hardware - those are hobbies- collections, building, playing, what have you. Hobbies.

The simple act of obtaining these things are not hobbies, and certainly shouldn't be considered interests in their own right.

If I enjoy gaming- then I'm going to spend a good amount of time shopping at circuit city and best buy (actually just kidding- I'd newegg- cause I know). If somebody asks what my interests and hobbies are, I'll most likely add gaming to the list. Not shopping for games and equiptment. And certainly not just shopping. [puke]

Chatting, hanging out, instant messaging, and other things that everybody does should also not be added to lists. In no way does chatting constitute a hobby. Hanging out generally includes something of interest (that all parties share), but the act itself is not an interest. And instant messaging is an instant portal to speeding the de-evolutionary effect that the internet has been causing man kind (or maybe just United Statian kind).

In accordance with my article on stereotypes, I will completely ignore these non-people who list such hobbies and interests. They are the scum of the earth. FEEL FREE TO TRY TO BREAK THE STEREOTYPE!

Next time you see a girl, ask a particularly geeky question - something about hard drives. Notice the difference between a guy's and a girl's response if they don't know.

The guy will either know the answer or make something up to try to sound like he knows (or if he's really intelligent, he might go to the nearest computer and google it. But then he wasn't that intelligent if he didn't know).

The girl will either know the answer, or respond with a "who cares" type answer. Because these geeky things - which are inherently gender unrelated don't really concern a modern american girl/woman. And it's just accepted as commonplace that they don't know the answer - to the point where the phrase "why are you asking me?" (Why would you expect me to know something?) doesn't surprise anybody.

Please dear lord, stop evading evolution and die before you reproduce.

Side Note: I don't believe that it's an inferiority of a particular sex, so much as an acceptance that the female gender has taken towards such stereotypes that society has accepted as commonplace. I believe women exist that break this stereotype, and that all women have the ability to break this stereotype, just as I believe that for any stereotype. Except goths- they might actually be vampires - stay tuned for some science!!!

"hmmm, if someone designs dresses for a hobby, then shopping factors into the making of a dress, so I suppose I agree with your opinion on this"

"I never really got to the point there, but I'm thinking that maybe people who write that as their hobby on their online profiles misconstrue the word "hobby""
