Society and the Female Body Image

The other night I (Kallie) was having dinner with Jarred and Andy and I told Jarred to write an article about anorexia and the female body image. He told me to do it.

So as most of you have heard by now, Mary-Kate Olsen has checked into a hospital to get therapy for her anorexia. This got me thinking about the image of beauty, and what the ideal woman is supposed to look like according to society.

In the 1950s and ‘60s, Marilyn Monroe was a huge role model to women everywhere. She was 5’5 ½’’, about 140 pounds and considered absolutely gorgeous. Today, women look up to celebrities like Britney Spears (5’4’’, 125 pounds), Cameron Diaz (5’9’’, 120 pounds) and Jennifer Aniston (5’5’’, 112 pounds). My little sister asks me if she is fat on a daily basis. She’s 7 years old (and far from fat.) “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is quite cliché, and though it’s a nice thought, there are standards that women hold themselves to. Because, sure, everybody has a different idea of beautiful, but MOST people view the previously mentioned celebrities as beautiful. And MOST women don’t look anything like that.

Little girls grow up playing with Barbie dolls, and idolizing unrealistically skinny women on TV, in movies, and in magazines. Obviously not every little girl who likes Britney Spears is going to become anorexic, (I’m a huge fan of her and I eat what I want, when I want to) but the fact remains that women are held to a ridiculous standard. Society gives an image of what women are supposed to look like. And in the 1950s and ‘60s, this was a healthy image. It was okay to have breasts and hips and thighs. Today, it is only acceptable to have breasts, and nothing else. Having a body with huge breasts and without hips and thighs is completely realistic. You just need to starve yourself for a while, and then get implants. No big deal. Even Britney Spears, who was named the sexiest woman alive by FHM magazine last year, has been under much scrutiny lately because of her “weight gain.”

The average American woman is about 5’5’’ and 145 pounds. Not everybody can be 5’9’’ and 120 pounds. It is quite possible that women will never be content with their own bodies, but it's important to make little girls aware that Barbie is not normal and that they weren’t necessarily meant to look like Britney Spears.

"holy! jennifer aniston looks way too skinny in that picture...I never thought she was that skinny...."

"One: This has all been said before Two: Women will never listen to any of this Three: Women only believe what they want to, never what other people think. "I think you're beautiful" doesn't fly anymore"

Kallie @ 06/28/04
"One: I felt the need to say it again. So bite me. Two: I still think it needed to be said. Three: ALL people believe what they want to."

SpIkE @ 06/28/04
"Ten: Some people believe anything they are told to believe."

"56: Andy's hot. "

SpIkE @ 06/28/04
"57: Damn skippy."

"there is still the whole other side to the story, the fact that our thin focused nation has a huge number of obese people. being healthy is attractive, being sickly thin or grossly overweight is not."

Spoonman @ 06/28/04
"Average woman 145? Damn that's fat."

Kallie @ 06/28/04
"Liz, I'm aware that obesity is a growing issue in the United States. I didn't say that I think that obesity is the way to go or that it is healthy to be overweight. But there is no denying that there is an unhealthy body image projected toward women in this country. This article wasn't meant to talk about the issue of obesity, I was simply discussing the pressure to be unrealistically thin. (I think that Andy and Robbie discuss the overweight issue plenty.) And as for you, Franklin, I'm aware that your asinine comment was only meant to get a reaction from me and I refuse to give you that type of satisfaction. How's the job?"

"Have you ever heard of the theory that female eating disorders, stem from the fact that in puberty, young women are having issues dealing with their changing bodies, and as a result, try to force themselvs back into their previous body."

selle @ 06/29/04
"thats understandable, i freaked when i was like 11 and within two months i got boobs and hips and a ton of stretch marks....."

Kallie @ 06/29/04
"Hips always made me really self conscious."

"Okay, Thank you! I'm really glad that someone agrees with me on the whole unrealistis body image that we get. Okay, it's one thing to be slender and healthy, but another to make it an obsession. "

Kallie @ 06/29/04
"Yeah..whene 7 year olds are asking if they're fat, it's far too much. I didn't question that sort of thing until I started getting boobs and hips and thighs."

"My sister nysa has been trying to get a little weight most of her life. She weighs just a hair over 100 lbs and she gets asked if she is anorexic much to her dismay quite often."
